UMYU Debunks Rumor Of Banning Christian Associations- See Management Decision

$

The attention of the Management of Umaru Musa Yar’adua University (UMYU), Katsina has been drawn to information circulating in the media related to an ‘Internal Memo’ by its Acting Dean, Student Affairs.
As a matter of routine, the Student Welfare Committee presented a report to the University Management Committee that there are 51 registered clubs and associations within the university. The report went further to state that these clubs and Associations were charged fees for registration by the Student Affairs Unit. Consequently, the Management Committee reviewed the report and took the following decisions:
1. Only Religious, Professional and State level associations or clubs are to be registered.
2. No fees should be charged for registration of associations or clubs henceforth.
In communicating the decisions the Acting Dean issued the ‘Internal Memo’ and what attracted much attention was the statement that the University allow only Muslim Student Society of Nigeria(MSSN) to operate. The explanation he provided when queried was that there are some Muslim sub-groups that have been seeking for registration and the line of statement was for them to all come under the umbrella of the MSSN.
The content of the “internal memo” was then interpreted by the social media and subsequently by two other print media to mean Christian Associations are not recognized or even taking matters to the extreme, banned. Obviously, there was never an attempt to verify the information from its source or usage of multiple sources to verify the information.

We make bold to state that what was reported in the social media and part of the print media on the matter at hand was neither the fact of the matter nor the intention of the University Management. UMYU is a committed equal opportunity Institution.
We are all proud of what UMYU has achieved so far. Among its peers in Nigeria, UMYU has had the most enduring legacy in terms of infrastructure, programmes and condusive teaching and learning environment enjoyed by all its staff and students. Consistently over the past years, students from over 30 States of the Federation are admitted into the University every year. This is apart from International Students it attracts every academic session. The same is also reflected in our Staff profile as they profess different faith and some no faith in any religion at all.

UNILAG First Class Graduate: I Met My Dad’s Target But He Wasn’t There To Celebrate With Me

$

Fate appeared to have played a fast one on Bayinah and her father, Dr. Bashir Tijani-Alawe. While Tijani-Alawe laboured for 20 years to earn his Ph.D, his daughter graduated at 20 years of age with a First Class honours. He had planned for his daughter’s convocation but destiny decided otherwise. Bayinah narrated what she called an unforgettable twist of fate in this report to ISIOMA MADIKE
The convocation of the University of Lagos on Wednesday, January 25, was a day that will remain in the memory of Bayinah Tijani-Alawe.
She was one of those who received their certificates on that day. Not only that Bayinah is beautiful, she is equally brainy.
She shone like a million stars in the department of Business Administration where she graduated with First Class honours.
That was what she promised her father, Dr. Bashir Tijani-Alawe. And she did it in style; at 20 years of age. Tijani-Alawe also graduated from the same department years back with a Second Class Upper honours; one of the best in his class that year.
When Bayinah got admitted into the same department and university, her father challenged her to better his result with a First Class. Bayinah promised and went on to deliver on the promise.
“That challenge made me to work very hard because I didn’t want to disappoint a man that gave me everything I needed to grow up as a child.
I was happy when he came home on that fateful day to break the news that I made him proud. “A friend from the university had called to congratulate him over my result.
He was so happy and rushed home to announce to the whole family that I made First Class. But, that was how far the joy could go.
He left us unceremoniously, unannounced,” Bayinah sniveled as she narrated the pathetic story to this reporter.
Perhaps, this may be the reason Bayinah was sad on her momentous occasion. She said: “My dad had planned big for the event.
Though, he was not the flamboyant type, but he wanted to bend his rigid rules on ceremonials just to show how happy and proud he was as a father whose daughter graduated at not only 20 but with a First Class honours.
He even promised to put on his Ph.D gown to take a memorable photograph with me. He was such a lovely and admirable father.
He was, indeed, a dad in a million. He was my role model. I’ll forever miss him.” The death of Tijani-Alawe, according to his daughter, was so sudden.
“No one saw it coming. He was not sick. He just collapsed and died while eating.” Tijani-Alawe was born on March 12, 1959, in Ejigbo, Osun State.
He ventured into academics immediately after his masters’ degree. His brilliance got him a job at The Polytechnic, Ibadan, Eruwa campus, as a lecturer.
He left Eruwa for the Federal Polytechnic Ilaro. He was also at City University before joining Caleb University, Imota, Lagos.
Some of his former students and others who knew him described Tijani-Alawe as an epitome of humility both in his thoughts and appearances.
He never, his schoolboys said, indulged in the notorious but booming sale of “hand-outs” because “he saw it as a way to further impoverish the already famished students.”
Tijani-Alawe was also said to be a religious person. He knew the holy Quran inside out as much as he knew the Bible.
“He was a prayer warrior as he did not play with his solat (five times daily prayer) and Tadjud (midnight) prayers. He believed that all powers belong to Almighty Allah.
He did not discriminate based on tribe, religion or under whatever disguise,” said Abiola Ayankunbi, who is one of those Tijani-Alawe mentored.
Tijani-Alawe was a thoroughbred academic. He was planning to join his alma mata, the University of Lagos, when he answered the last call.
He enrolled for his Ph.D at the University of Lagos more than two decades ago. He was nearly frustrated out of the programme but remained committed to the cause he believed in.
Tijani-Alawe eventually graduated and had his convocation in June, 2016, but died on Friday, December 2, of the same year.
That was barely six months after bagging the Ph.D he laboured so hard to earn and a week after his daughter, Bayinah, graduated with a First Class honours in same department and university. It looked as though fate planned the academic journey for father and daughter.
Some have termed it an irony of sort. Tijani-Alawe spent 20 years to obtain his Ph.D and his daughter, Bayinah, graduated with First Class honours at the age of 20 years.
He led seminar sessions, facilitated management lectures to different categories of managers, and consulted for many companies in Nigeria. He was the author of three books and a research fellow of the Industrial Science Centre (FIS).
Tijani-Alawe was also a member of Nigerian Institute of Management (MNIM), as well as an associate member of Certified Institute of Marketing (ACIM), now National Institute of Nigeria and a graduate member of the Institute of Personnel Management (GIPM) of Nigeria.
He had 25 learned journal articles, four research monographs and over 40 conference papers to his credit. He also served on the Research Board of Advisors of the America Biographical Institute, Raleigh, North Carolina, USA.
Tijani-Alawe main research interest was in the area of African Business Philosophy, Strategy and Entrepreneurship.

Wow! Nigerian Schools Will Soon Stop Teaching Maths and Science in English Language...See Details

$

It has been revealed that Nigerian schools will soon stop teaching students Mathematics and Science using the English language.
File photo: Nigerian Students
Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, the Minister of Science and Technology, has said plans are underway to ensure that primary schools in the country teach mathematics and science subjects in indigenous languages.
The plan is meant to encourage the application of science and technology in the country, Onu said.
The Punch reports that the minister stated this while addressing pupils of Ekulu Primary School in Enugu, the Enugu State capital.
Onu was at the school to present computer sets and other science kits donated by the Ministry of Science and Technology to the school.
Noting that Nigeria’s future depended on how effectively it applied science and technology, Onu said the country could one day send scientists into space.
The minister said the Federal Government was worried about the low interest in mathematics and the sciences in primary and secondary schools across the country.
The problem can be addressed by “popularising” the subjects, he said.
Onu stated, “The Ministry of Science and Technology is worried over the low interest in mathematics and the science subjects, so, we are working on plans to teach mathematics and sciences in indigenous languages in primary schools.

“These pupils grow up with their indigenous languages at home before they start going to school, where they are now taught in foreign languages. So, we have observed that there is a challenge to understand the foreign languages first before they could even start understanding what they are being taught.

“We believe that this plan will help our students to understand mathematics and the science subjects, and also promote the application of science and technology for national development.”
He added that some countries that were making advancement in science and technology, such as India, adopted a similar strategy by teaching mathematics and the science subjects in indigenous languages at the primary school level.
The minister, however, said there was a need to first develop the vocabulary of the indigenous languages before they could be used to teach the subjects effectively.
He said the Ministry of Science and Technology would collaborate with the Ministry of Education to develop the capacity of the local languages to serve as effective tools for teaching mathematics and science subjects.
He believed that Nigeria would remain an import-dependent nation if the citizens did not embrace science and technology.

He linked the socio-economic challenges in the country to inadequate application of science and technology.
The minister stated, “No nation can become great without science and technology. If Nigeria is to be great, then, Nigerians must embrace science and technology.

“You can’t produce anything without science and technology. We are exporting our jobs by importing everything we need, and that is why our graduates are no longer able to get jobs after their studies.

“For us to build the country of our dreams, for us to make Nigeria a truly great nation, a nation that is able to feed and house its citizens, a nation with a stable currency, we must embrace science and technology.

“It is my duty as the minister of science and technology to make Nigerians to understand this.”

OAU 2017 Distance E-Learning Programs Form Out- Study Online & Get Certificate

$
0
0

Have you applied for OAU Distance E-Learning Programs? You can now study at your own pace, anywhere you are and still get the same certificate as on-campus student!

OAU has introduced eLearning for some of its programmes. These programmes are administered through its Center for Distance Learning.

WHAT IS E-LEARNING?

e-Learning is the delivery of education where the instructor and the learners are geographically separated- and technology, is used to bridge the instructional gap.
The convergence of new information technology such as telecommunications, computers, satellite and Optic Fibre technology has facilitated harnessing the power of information technology to deliver distance education.
Thus, a variety of technologies (audio, video, data and print) are utilized for possible delivery systems and how they are delivered (e.g. satellite, microwave, Optic Fibre etc..).
The choice of the appropriate instructional technology depends on learner needs and course requirements.

About OAU eLearning Programme

The programme is administered online through a customized study tablet called the Vigitab. Students do not have to report to a physical classroom. Their classroom is on the Vigitab which would be given to each student upon resumption. You are only required to come to school to write your exams. Quizzes and Assignments are taken and submitted online as well. Lecture materials come in the form of PowerPoint slides which instructors use to teach the classes. Lectures are captured on video and
accompanied by hand-outs in PDF format, and other additional materials and references as the instructor deems necessary.
The curricula for the various programmes are the same as for regular in-house programmes within the University; hence, the degrees, diplomas and certificates are the same as for full-time students. eLearning students also learn from the same lecturers who teach on-campus as they deliver lectures and course material online or pre-recorded, thus ensuring parity of curriculum contents and academic standards both on-campus and off-campus.
The total time to complete an online course is equivalent to that of an on-campus
programme and the same degree will be earned as the ones on-campus.
