Commandant-General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Abdullahi Mohammed Gana, has disclosed that his agency would be targeting the recruitment of at least 100, 000 able-bodied Nigerians to beef up its workforce in line with the growing demands to secure the critical infrastructures of government across the country.

He disclosed this yesterday in Abuja shortly after he decorated newly ten promoted Assistant Comptrollers-General (ACGs), adding that the recruitment had become necessary to meet up with the request for its personnel running into several thousands from the ministries of Defence, Agriculture, Solid Mineral, among others.

He said: “We have made request to the government that for us to meet up with these requirements, we will need to beef up our personnel and we are looking at the possibility of recruiting 100, 000.
“We are facing more and more challenges on daily basis. Just some months ago, we had a meeting with the federal ministry of Solid Minerals where the Minister said that they would be requiring a 5, 000-man squad in line with the government decision to diversify the economy.

“The minister, Dr Kayode Fayemi, had during the meeting insisted that my men must be trained and retrained to understand the modus operandi of the sector especially on the identification of solid mineral very well. Today, we have set up Solid Mineral unit in the corps.”

Speaking further, “After that the Minister of Agriculture, Chief Audi Ogbeh, has also approached us to request for a 3, 000-man squad to hold in checking the activities of the Fulani herdsmen and manning the 5, 000 ranches the ministry intend to establish in the country. He later demanded for an additional 3, 000 men.

“We have also held meeting with the Minister of Defence, who requested that we prepare and deploy about 3300 of our men to the North East where the military have dislodged the Boko Haram insurgence to secure the civilians.

“The same thing with the MD of the Nigeria Railway Corporation has also requested the deployment of 3, 000 men to their 22 installations accords the country since the sector has been classified among the critical infrastructure of government.

“The same request came from the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and essentially from the office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) requesting the deployment of our men to secure the dams in the country following the threat from Boko Haram to poison the source of our drinking water.” he stated.

1.0 BRIEF HISTORY OF IJMBE
The Interim Joint Matriculation Board Examination (IJMBE) is a national examination body approved by the Federal Government of Nigeria and fully certified by Nigeria University Commission (NUC) as an alternative to ‘A’ level Examination, for candidates who may wish to seek for undergraduate admission into Universities both in Nigeria and abroad. The IJMBE programme was envisioned as a stop-gap or bridge after secondary school education, which will prepare candidates academically, mentally and socially for the challenges of University education. The programme runs for a period of twelve (12) calendar months divided into two (2) semesters.
IJMBE is under the control of a Governing Board – the Interim Joint Matriculation Board (IJMB) which was established in 1970. The Governing Board has the overall responsibility for taking policy decisions on the conduct of the IJMBE, and affiliating institutions for the purpose of running the IJMBE programme.
The IJMBE examination is based on an approved IJMBE syllabus which was produced by harmonizing the contents of the syllabus of the former Higher School Certificate (HSC), London GCE, Cambridge A – Level examination and the 100 level curriculum of Nigeria Universities. The syllabus is reviewed every five years in line with global changes.
The IJMBE is a qualifying examination conducted annually, mainly for Advanced Level (A/L) subjects for admission to 200 level (Direct Entry) in Nigerian and foreign Universities. Candidates for the examination are presented through affiliated institutions.
The institutions affiliated to the IJMBE programme cut across the different strata of tertiary education in Nigeria. These institutions are private, state and Federal institutions. Currently, there are over seventy (70) institutions including Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma spread across Nigeria affiliated to IJMBE programme.

The annual examination has been conducted consistently since the inception of the IJMBE under the control of IJMB Governing Board. The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has from 1978 been the moderating agency to IJMBE Examinations. JAMB moderates the questions and supervises the marking of the scripts through external moderators it recruits from Universities throughout the country.

A pin drop silence enveloped Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, convocation ground when the news of the death of one of the best graduating students, Bibilari Elebuibon, was announced.
Elebuibon, whose father is a popular ifa priest in Osogbo, bagged the award of best student overall performance in Yoruba Language in the Faculty of Arts at the 42nd convocation ceremony of the OAU. When he was invited to the rostrum by the Dean of Faculty of Arts, Prof. Gbemisola Adeoti, to receive the award, his colleagues were unusually silent. Instead of clapping in anticipation of his emergence from the crowd, the crowd screamed mournfully.

It was at this juncture that the Public Relations of Officer, Mr. Abiodun Olarewaju, announced that a minute silence be observed in honour of Elebuibon. It was gathered that the late Elebuibon died in an auto crash at Osogbo, capital of Osun State in July. At the convocation, no fewer than 66 students graduated with first class degrees.
The convocation ceremony, which started on Wednesday, also saw 15 students graduate with distinctions from the faculty of pharmacy. The university also produced 1305 students with second class upper; 2127 second class lower; 606 third class and 50 students had pass.

It's not everyday you see this type of thing. Some youth corpers have been forced to kneel on the floor for a certain period of time after they annoyed their platoon leader.

The corpers were forced to kneel on the ground for some time
The manner in which about 20 National Youth Corps Members were punished by a miltary platoon leader has caused controversy online.
About 20 graduates currently undergoing orientation at a camp in Umunna, Bende area of Abia state were forced to kneel in the sun for some time after allegedly annoying their platoon leader.
However, many people have condemned the military man who punished the graduates as they opined that they should not have been given such a treatment. Some have said the act is tantamount to abuse.
A corps member who reported the incident wrote: "I am a corp member currently undergoing orientation course at the NYSC orientation camp, Umunna, Bende, Abia state. This morning, during parade rehearsals, some corp members in 9 Platoon got the platoon inspector annoyed and he punished them by kneeling them down for some time before releasing them. #Even graduates still get kindergarten punishments."

People have condemned the photo and reacted to it saying the punishment was uncalled for.
"Laughing. Hilarious seeing grown ups this way. Almost 40 Educated Graduates, kneeling with their hands in the air, controlled by one Gun-less Soldier. These Corpers kneeling down, are all embarrassment to their educated minds, and to their rights. Never ever allow any man put you on your knees, no matter what," someone wrote.
"They are in a camp for training, nothing degrading here; discipline is the watch word, they can take up their certificates when they leave the camp." another added.

“My thoughts and prayer go out to the friends and families of the dead corps members, and I hope that their deaths will bring the change that we need; that we can say at last, enough is enough, and stop the collective bleeding of our hearts.”
On Saturday, I received an email from my 18-year-old daughter, which she titled, “My bleeding heart.” When I saw the title, I stopped everything and opened it. I could feel blood rushing to my head, as I started to read:
“My heart is gladdened when I go on Twitter, and see how outraged my fellow youths are over the tragic deaths of Ifedolapo Oladepo, and Monday Ukemo, who lost their lives for a programme I regard as unnecessary. An unnecessary programme that my sister, and brother, and cousin, have gone through, and my parents expect me to go through when the time comes.
“But a day later, or a week, or even a few hours, we are back to our lives, because that is not our story. Ifedolapo is not us – or at least that is what we tell ourselves. She is not my beautiful hardworking sister. She is not my handsome innovative brother. The God we serve won’t let that happen to us. We are privileged, and our parents will make it all work out.
“We forget that while she may not be us at this point, the next victim could very well be. We don’t put ourselves in the position of those who mourn her today and every day of their lives going forward. We forget that this line between “us” the untouchable and invincible, and “them”, the victims, is just imaginary. Unless, of course, we change the system.
“Ifedolapo’s story isn’t just something to be re-tweeted, and liked, and cried over; it’s now a sore thumb in our history. She does not need your words. The fellow Nigerian who was just raped does not need your words. The starving Nigerian child does not need your words. The mentally abused Nigerian does not need your words. They don’t need mine. They need action.
“So why am I taking my time to write these words? Written words are my thing and they convey half of what I feel inside which is a lot and encompasses anguish, depression, sorrow, frustration, irritation, anger, hope and a whole lot more and this is the closest I can get to expressing these feelings aside from action. These words are being written so each and every one of you can witness me and hold me accountable. I will act. I must act.
“Why? Because I am sad. I’m sad at the world that is becoming. Sad that we’re unable to hold government accountable, and that, as citizens, we also appear helpless to do anything for ourselves; sad that these ideas might only go so far because many of us are content in our darkness.
“We are content not knowing and exercising our rights. We are content with our children’s teachers abusing our children physically, mentally and emotionally in the name of culture, respect and discipline.
“We are content not knowing whether there are resources available to abuse victims. We are content not knowing that there are special schools available for children with disabilities and instead forcing them to be subject to abuses from their teachers and classmates because if they work hard enough, they can overcome it all. We are content.
“Share this with your child or friend. Have difficult conversations with your children regarding all that is going on – enough of us privileged kids living in bubbles. If I didn’t have my parents lay the foundation by not over-sheltering me, I’d probably have left this whole conversation at a re-tweet. If you have ideas that could change Nigeria for the better, share them with those who can help make it a reality.
“My parents may not be too thrilled with me disclosing this information because they have, for all my life, been dedicated to ensuring my security and protecting me but I have come to the realisation that they can only protect me so much from this world we live in and I don’t want to be protected.
“Enough of us choosing to not read the full details about the horrific abuse of a 6-year old girl; enough of us looking away from the violent pictures depicting the very real impact of Boko Haram. We have closed our eyes too tight and for too long and no matter how blinding it will be when we open it up, we need to open our eyes. Enough is enough.
“I have cried. I have shouted. I have mourned the country I call home for the first time and now I am ready to get to work. There is a lot we cannot change but I genuinely believe there is even more that we can and that’s what matters. The question to consider now and when you’re writing your new year’s resolution is; what are you going to do about it?”
After reading the letter, a surge of depression washed over me. The country actually lost three – not two corps members, in one week: the third, Chinyerum Elechi, died in Bayelsa.
We don’t know if they arrived at their camps with pre-existing conditions, but we know for sure that the negligence of camp officials complicated matters.
I just had two children go through the corps, and what happened to Ifedolapo, Monday, and Chinyerem, could have happened to any of them.
How do I explain to Nkechi, that in two years when she’ll be ready for the National Youth Service Corps, things would be – might be – different?
I replied:
“Nwa Nbeshi.
“I know how deeply upset you are about the deaths of Ifedolapo, and Monday. These were young people full of hope and promise. Did they have pre-existing health conditions? No one can say for sure. But what obviously cries out, is the negligence of the camp officials. Now, it’s over.
“It has happened so many times before, I cannot say it won’t happen again, or concede that you should refuse your call-up when the time comes.
“You are right. When these things happen, we just re-tweet, moan, and move on. That’s why it happens again.
“If corps members in Kano, Zamfara, or Bayelsa, refused to answer the parade call, and insisted on peaceful protests to the offices of the respective State Commanders, demanding they won’t stop until the deaths were investigated at least, the dead will not rise again, but the message will be clear: the next batch of corps members will be taken more seriously.
“Your generation will have to do more than living in the comfort of sheltered lives.
“They’ll have to put their effort where their tweet is.
“My thoughts and prayer go out to the friends, and families of the dead corps members, and I hope that their deaths will bring the change that we need; that we can say at last, enough is enough, and stop the collective bleeding of our hearts.”
